The existing Infortrend EonStor SCSI DAS (Direct Attached Storage) with 6TB of disk space was replaced by two new Infortrend EonStor DS range SAN devices each containing 24TB with spare bays for later disk expansion. The new SAN's were attached to the VMware vSphere infrastructure using the network with the iSCSI protocol. The iSCSI connections were multipathed, which allows multiple connections from the servers to the storage and this provides performance and resilence in the case of a network connection failing.
The school now has thin provisioning, volume copy/volume mirror, data snapshots and the ability for automatic data replication in the future. The main benefit of the new system is that the individual SANS are in differerent physical locations, so critical data can be sotred twice to protect the schools data against a disaster.
